John L. Shuster, Jr., M.D. – Chief Medical Officer

John L. Shuster, Jr., M.D. is a psychiatrist and palliative medicine physician who serves as Chief Medical Officer for MindCare Solutions.  He is also a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.  He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and his medical degree from Emory University.  He served an internship at Erlanger Medical Center/University of Tennessee School of Medicine in Chattanooga, then served as resident and chief resident in psychiatry in Boston at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Shuster was a Soros Faculty Scholar in the Project on Death in America, was the founding Director of the Center for Palliative Care at the University of Alabama School of Medicine (UAB), and is past President of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (APM).  He is the former Chief Medical Officer of Alive Hospice in Nashville and has co-edited three books, including the textbook Principles and Practice of Palliative Care and Supportive Oncology, recently published in its fourth edition, and Palliative Care Consultant, published in 2008.

Dr. Shuster is currently studying for the Master of Divinity degree at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.  He is married and the father of four children.
